Friday, fun day

Today sucked in one of those "I am going to blow everything out of proportion" ways. Sure, I was on the receiving end of a "Dear Playwright" email. And sure, I found out some of my pictures are being distributed royalty-free without my consent. Oh and sure, I'm feeling like my fairy godmother gave me the gift of being good at the opposite of everything I want to be good at... but is all that a good enough reason to write a pity-party-of-one entry?

Not really.

So I won't post it, but I promise you, it was awful pitiful.

Now I'm at home, enjoying the evening with my husband and a bottle of wine, feeling much better.

On the plus side I found out several of my pictures have sold in the last two years. I am apparently very popular in business textbooks and magazines in the UK and South Africa. So there's that.

The ones I think will sell are never the ones people want. It's that kind of day.

"Three Sheets"

If you're not watching "Three Sheets," I urge you to start. Four seasons are available on Hulu now.

It's about a comedian named Zane Lamprey who travels the world and drinks with everybody. Hilarity ensues. See for yourself:

What I Hate Most About the Ghost Whisperer...

... is at the end of every episode, when the ghosts communicate through the "whisperer," she never relates what was said verbatim to the loved ones but her own interpretation. Words have subtlety. There's meaning in sentence construction. And she butchers it. Every time.

For example, Ghost: "Tell her I'll never stop loving her. Tell her our love is stronger than the cancer that took me. I'll never forget the time we ate those biscuits and gravy at the little bed and breakfast at the Cape. Oh, how we laughed. She's so beautiful when she laughs."

Whisperer: "He says, 'Biscuits and gravy cause cancer.'"

Loved one: "Wha?"

And that, that is what I hate most about the Ghost Whisperer.

New dining table and updated photoblog

We ordered a dining table and chairs yesterday, which means for the first time in my life I will have made a choice and not been subject to the whims of kitchen table fate -- having made conscious decisions on style and color, with a tape measure and a rough diagram, I will have designed this space, by gum. And it will work.

Or it won't. I'm easy.

We also checked out some upholstery fabric to see how color works in the room. The bad news is it may take up to 5 months to receive the sofa we like, but after a life-time of waiting that doesn't seem so bad. I'm leaning towards an orange fabric.

I didn't know I was an orange person, yet there it is. I have an orange hallway upstairs and soon I will likely have an orange couch. This particular orange should look nice with the gray-green walls and dark wood. Well, that's the plan anyway.

I'm supposed to be cleaning. I'm taking a break after pruning back bushes, watering the lawn, and hacking up some ivy that was trying to escape. On this "break" I've been going through my photoblog and adding tags since my old tag plug-in doesn't work with WordPress 3.0. Oh, and I upgraded to WP3.0. Chose a new template. Fun stuff. Way more fun than cleaning.

If you know anyone who wants a nice pub table with two chairs or a functional kitchen table with four chairs, I'd love to hear from you. I keep meaning to post them for sale on Craig's List...

Ugh. Time to clean a bathroom.

Garden Photos

I spent the weekend working on the yard. Here are some pictures:

I think this is a Hydrangea

Asiatic Lily -- it just grew one day, I can't take credit for it

Hanging Petunias -- also a catchy band name

Zinnias

Table with Lemon Zest Petunias and herbs

Happy Independence Day, Plus a Garden Update

This weekend took us to the garden section of Home Depot. I brought home some Moss Rose, pink Gerbera Daisies, Lemon Zest Petunias, Dianthus, Zinnias, some sort of white flowers, BBQ Rosemary, and Sweet Basil. For the indoors I chose a Rubber Tree plant.

We hung pewter colored black-out curtains in the bedroom yesterday so I slept in later than normal, due to not getting blinded at sunrise. At about 10:30am I went outside and started planting the flowers in pots on the deck and pruning back bushes around the yard. Three hours passed. I was sure it was more like one.

It's been such a long time since I've worked in a garden. Since we moved in I've done the smallest amount possible to keep things alive. Mostly I made sure the lawn didn't entirely die. And now I see we have some Orange Asiatic Lilies and some white daisies popping up. It's very cool.

I include as many names of flowers here as I can because I'm historically hopeless about plant names. Maybe this will help me remember.

It's a whole new season. Let's see how long I can keep these little guys healthy.
