Hello, Beautiful Maladies

How come nobody told me about Tom Waits?

I had to discover him in a dive bar over Bloody Marys, extra horseradish -- a chance jukebox selection, "Innocent When You Dream," and I sat up straight.

Shame on you, America. You taught me the theme song to every 80's sit-com, but you couldn't even throw me a little gravel-throated bone.

Once on a car ride with my family, when I was about 11, my brother handed me his Sony Walkman and I was introduced to Tom Waits. I was really enjoying it until he started into his rendition of "Somewhere" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6BJLjTDtXo. My dad had to pull the car over and I threw up on the side of the road. Of course it could have been from car sickness, but the joke in our family has always been that Tom Waits makes me puke.

I'm sorry that you blew chunks, kikiriki, but that is pretty funny.
